Opening and closing a register

Count the till to open and close a register, and see what to bank.

Each register is opened at the start of the day and closed at the end. Both are done by counting the cash in the till, so Smooth POS always knows what should be there, what is there, and how much to take to the bank.

Before you start: the register's float

Every register has a Cash Float: the amount of cash you leave in the till overnight so you can give change in the morning, like $150. Set it in the register's settings, under its store. Closing uses it to work out how much to bank.

Open a register

  1. On the register, go to Open for the day.
  2. Count the cash in the till by entering how many of each note and coin you have in the Cash Count. Smooth POS adds it up for you.
  3. Check the Till panel. It shows the Opening Balance the register expects (the float left at the last close), the Cash Counted and any Variance between the two.
  4. Select Open register.

There's no separate box for the opening float: the count you enter is the opening float.

Close a register

  1. Go to Close for the day.

  2. Count the till again, note by note and coin by coin.

  3. Check the Till panel:

    LineWhat it is
Opening BalanceThe cash in the till when it opened.
Cash CollectedCash taken during the day.
Expected Till TotalOpening Balance plus Cash Collected.
    Cash CountedWhat you've just counted.
VarianceCash Counted minus Expected Till Total. Positive means extra cash, negative means some is missing.
FloatHow much stays in the till for tomorrow: the register's Cash Float, or everything you counted if that's less.
Amount to BankCash Counted minus the Float. This is what goes to the bank.
  4. Select Close register. If there's a variance, you're asked to confirm it first.

After closing, the summary shows the Cash Counted, the Float left in the till and the Amount to Bank. From here you can Reprint Cash Count or Print Sales Person Report, then select Done.

A worked example

The register's Cash Float is $150. At close, the till panel shows:

  • Opening Balance: $150.00
  • Cash Collected: $176.50
  • Expected Till Total: $326.50
  • Cash Counted: $326.50, so the Variance is $0.00
  • Float: $150.00, and Amount to Bank: $176.50

Put $176.50 in the bank bag and leave $150.00 in the till. Tomorrow's Opening Balance is $150.00.

Tips

  • Count carefully before you commit. A variance is recorded with the close, so recount if it looks wrong.
  • Every open and close is logged with who did it, what was counted and the variance, in the register's Open / Close Log.
